Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman, two statisticians at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, are credited with creating R, the free language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. They began it in the early 1990s, partly because Ihaka disliked the software their undergraduates used for data analysis.
Credit for today's R is shared more widely. In mid-1997 the founders gave write access to the source code to a core group including Peter Dalgaard, Kurt Hornik, Martin Mächler and Luke Tierney, and Hornik and Friedrich Leisch set up CRAN, the package archive, that year. The R Core Team still maintains R, and the R Foundation for Statistical Computing, set up in Vienna in 2003, supports the project.
A common quiz trap is John Chambers. He designed S at Bell Labs, the language R reimplements, and joined R Core in 2000, but he did not create R. Later, Gentleman co-founded Bioconductor, the R project for genomic data, in 2001, and Ihaka received New Zealand's Pickering Medal in 2008.
