Frank Rosenblatt, a research psychologist at the Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory in Buffalo, New York, described it in a January 1957 report and a 1958 Psychological Review paper. A perceptron is a single artificial neuron that outputs 1 when a weighted sum of its inputs exceeds a threshold. It learns the weights from labeled examples, changing them only after a mistake: w ← w + η(y − ŷ)x.
The Office of Naval Research funded the work, and in July 1958 the Navy showed an IBM 704 simulation that learned to tell cards marked on the left from those marked on the right after 50 trials. The New York Times reported the Navy expected it to "walk, talk, see, write, reproduce itself and be conscious of its existence". The Mark I Perceptron, with 400 photocells and weights stored in motor-driven potentiometers, was demonstrated publicly in 1960.
A single perceptron draws one straight boundary, so it can learn AND but not XOR, a limit Minsky and Papert stressed in their 1969 book Perceptrons.
