Ian Goodfellow is credited with inventing generative adversarial networks (GANs). He was first author of "Generative Adversarial Nets", posted to arXiv on 10 June 2014 and presented at NIPS 2014, written with Yoshua Bengio, Aaron Courville and five others at the Université de Montréal. A GAN trains two networks against each other, one generating samples and one judging them.
By Goodfellow's account, the idea came during an argument at Les 3 Brasseurs, a Montreal bar, at a friend's going-away party. Friends wanted a program that could generate photos and planned to model image statistics in detail; he proposed letting a second network judge the outputs instead. He went home, coded it that night, and says the first version worked without any hyperparameter search, producing MNIST-style digits.
Credit is not entirely uncontested: Jürgen Schmidhuber argues GANs are a special case of his 1990 artificial curiosity work, while Goodfellow has argued the methods differ. Goodfellow later worked at Google Brain, OpenAI and Apple, and joined DeepMind in 2022.
