AlphaGo won 4 games to 1. In the Google DeepMind Challenge Match, played at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul from 9 to 15 March 2016, AlphaGo won games 1, 2, 3 and 5, and Lee Sedol, a 9-dan professional, won game 4.
Games used Chinese rules, 7.5 points of komi, and two hours per side plus three 60-second byoyomi periods. Two moves became famous. AlphaGo's move 37 in game 2 was one DeepMind estimated a human would play with a probability of about 1 in 10,000. Lee's move 78 in game 4 was rated just as unlikely; AlphaGo's play fell apart afterwards and it resigned after 180 moves.
The $1 million prize went to charities including UNICEF, and the Korea Baduk Association gave AlphaGo an honorary 9-dan rank. A natural follow-up is what came next: AlphaGo Zero, trained only by self-play, beat the Lee Sedol version 100 games to 0 in 2017, and Lee retired in 2019, calling AI "an entity that cannot be defeated".
