Geoffrey Hinton. Ruslan Salakhutdinov and Ilya Sutskever did their PhDs with him at the University of Toronto. Yann LeCun is the partial exception: after his 1987 PhD at Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, he spent about a year as a postdoc in Hinton's new Toronto group before joining AT&T Bell Labs in 1988.
Salakhutdinov coauthored the 2006 Science paper with Hinton showing that deep autoencoders, pretrained layer by layer, reduce dimensionality much better than PCA, and became a professor at Carnegie Mellon. Sutskever coauthored AlexNet with Alex Krizhevsky and Hinton in 2012, coauthored the 2014 sequence-to-sequence paper and cofounded OpenAI in 2015. LeCun went on to pioneer convolutional networks.
Hinton moved to Toronto in 1987 after five years at Carnegie Mellon, and his lab trained a long list of researchers, including Radford Neal, Brendan Frey and George Dahl. A common quiz trap is to add Bengio: he did his PhD at McGill and postdocs at MIT and Bell Labs, and was never Hinton's student.
