Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun and Yoshua Bengio, though the usual nickname is the "Godfathers of AI", or more precisely the godfathers of deep learning, not the "Good Parents of AI". It is a media label, not a formal title, for the three researchers whose work underpins modern deep learning.
Their ties go back decades. LeCun was Hinton's postdoc in Toronto, and Bengio coauthored LeCun's 1998 LeNet-5 paper. In 2004, when neural networks were out of fashion, Hinton founded a Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) program, now Learning in Machines & Brains, that brought the three together; they jokingly called themselves the "deep learning conspiracy". The nickname spread after their shared 2018 Turing Award.
Today they disagree in public. Hinton left Google in May 2023 so he could speak freely about AI risk, and Bengio also warns of catastrophic risks, while LeCun calls such fears overblown. Two quiz traps: Hinton alone is often called "the godfather of AI", and Fei-Fei Li, who created ImageNet, is often called its "godmother".
