Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun shared the 2018 ACM A.M. Turing Award, often called the Nobel Prize of computing, for conceptual and engineering breakthroughs that made deep neural networks a critical component of computing. It is the 2018 award, but ACM announced it on 27 March 2019, so it is often misdated.
Each is known for different pieces. Hinton coauthored the 1986 Nature paper that popularized backpropagation, co-invented Boltzmann machines and coauthored AlexNet in 2012. LeCun developed convolutional networks at AT&T Bell Labs, where they went into a system for reading bank checks. Bengio pioneered neural language models with learned word embeddings and coauthored the 2014 papers that introduced attention for translation and generative adversarial networks.
The $1 million prize, funded by Google, was presented in San Francisco on 15 June 2019. Two later honors are easy to confuse with it: Hinton shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield, and the 2024 Turing Award went to Andrew Barto and Richard Sutton for reinforcement learning.
